It seems that MSDOS 6.x is aware of time zones. If the environment variable TZ is not set, it apparently assumes that it is operating under Pacific time zone. I haven't fully explored how this version of MSDOS uses the time zone information - it doesn't change the date and time, but it does have an effect on programmes that are time sensitive. If anyone here has any detailed knowledge on what this version of DOS does with the TZ variable, could you post it? All I could find on the web related to operation of PGP and time stamping of usenet messages. TIA -- Jim Backus OS/2 user bona fide replies to jimb-thecirclethingy-jita-dp-demon-dp-co-dp-uk remove dashes and make the obvious substitutions for valid email address http://www.jita.demon.co.uk

The answer is "very little". Few progs knew how to check the TZ
variable, and, to make it worse, M$ tended to format this in a
non-standard way.
IMHO, unless you are running an app that *very clearly* states what
it is expecting from TZ (eg Demon's old version of KA9Q) do *NOT*
expect anything to get it right. This includes most M$ apps.
MS-DOS was **** at timezones, chiefly because M$ didn't understand
them. The nasty legacy is still with us now.
Why is this important? There are better/other ways of dealing with
this. The most useful is to set the PC clock to localtime, as this is
what nearly all M$ apps of that era expected.
Regards,
Harry.

Well, I have met this problem too, I will post my question below your subject. All I could find on the >web related to operation of PGP and time stamping of usenet messages. DOS knows nothing of TZ. UNIX & C libraries and utilities, because of their origin, may well default to California time; and may even be settable for other US time zones - after all, nowhere else matters. DOS translations of UNIX & C code are likely to inherit existing defects; and may only have those parts needed for the place of translation translated. The GAWK that I was interested in, for example, would accept a TZ string; but it ignored the change-date rules provided, using only the Merkin ones. Some programs written for DOS use these libraries - a program which goes silly from 2038-01-19 can be assumed to do so. <URL:http://www.merlyn.demon.co.uk/misctime.htm#TZ> <URL:http://www.merlyn.demon.co.uk/js-date5.htm#DDTA> -- John Stockton, Surrey, UK. jrs@merlyn.demon.co.uk Turnpike v4.00 MIME. Web <URL:http://www.merlyn.demon.co.uk/> - FAQish topics, acronyms, & links. The only program I know of that actually uses the TZ variable is Netscape. I presume MSIE does the same on a DOS/Win 3.x machine. Just do a google search using "set TZ=" and you can find all the references you need for the variable settings.

Current versions of Info-Zip's ZIP.EXE and UNZIP.EXE also use it, unfortunately. -- Charles Dye raster@highfiber.com

"Unfortunately" because time stamps in DOS .ZIP archives traditionally refer to _local_ times, not GMT. A quick browse through the MS-DOS 7.1 kernel reveals a few strings which appear to be names of environment variables. TZ doesn't seem to be among them. Other versions of DOS will differ, but MS-DOS 7.1 seems interested in: CONFIG= TMP= and TEMP= TEMPPROMPT= or perhaps \TEMPPROMPT= (?) winbootdir= PATH= COMSPEC= I'm guessing that some of these are simply set at boot time for use by the default command shell, and never referenced by DOS thereafter. -- Charles Dye raster@highfiber.com
