     From a beginner.

I need to drive a graphics tube through COM2 using watcom
fortran. I am able to write to the tube but not able to read from it
using

     OPEN (8,FILE='COM2') etc.

The same thing happens in vanilla DOS with CTTY COM2,
I get the DOS prompt on
the dumb terminal and can even type but then when I hit the return key
it either freezes or I get,
General error reading com2. This also happens with a dumb terminal
in place of the graphics tube.

The pc is willing for me to type at the 'abort, retry, fail'
prompt, and even echoes back what I type giving me the message over
and over again, but when I hit the return
key it jams again. Hitting the break key gets me back to the prompt.
I can type commands at the prompt but when I hit the return key
it freezes.

Kermit on the other hand is able and willing to both read and
write between my pc and anything I stick on com2 including the
graphics tube and the dumb terminal. Of course kermit is passing
nothing to the command interpreter, and I feel that its not a problem
with reading but with the returns or something else.

I am using a null modem cable
