I was just talking with a friend of mine about multitasking. We were wondering; as it is quite possible to multitask under DOS with DESQview (or even Windows), how come this doesn't come integrated with MSDOS? Are the Microsoft programmers not as good as Quarterdeck programmers, or is it some sort of a political issue. After a multitasking DOS had been released from Microsoft, it might have new support for all kinds of API calls that new DOS-programs could use to multitask, just like Windows or DV. Why don't they do it? I think a character-based multitasking OS would sell plenty among those who don't like fancy GUI's. Of course there are unices, but they restrict programming graphics and other fancy tricks pretty much. And they also take too much space; DESQview can be fitted to just a couple of hunded kilobytes. I just keep dreaming of a DOS release that would create "a real standard" for such an interface/api. While waiting for MSDOS 6.0 which will probably bring nothing but one or two new external commands, can anyone recommend a DOS-binary compatible multitasking operating system? OS/2 is too big and it's graphics, I already have Linux but miss MSDOS programs. Please comment, and if this newsgroup seems inappropriate, reply to some other group... (Btw, when I talk about multi-tasking here, I mean whatever ways there are to make several programs run at the same time under 386... Time-slicing or "sleep"-calls etc.) PS. Having followed the MSDOS progress & quality for several years now, I suppose everyone would probably use some external multitasker anyway... :-) -- kennu@mits.mdata.fi Celibacy is not hereditary.
