Depending on your requirements (number of colors and resolution required)
you will probably want to use an EGA compatible mode (640 x 350 x 16
colors), a non-standard mode (Mode X as documented in past Dr. Dobbs
Journals), the 256 color VGA mode (320 x 200, mode 0x13), or a 256 color
SVGA mode (such as 640 x 400, or 640 x 480). The first two can do true
page swapping. Mode 0x13 can do some very rapid updates of the entire
screen (45 frames per second with a 486/33 and a good video adapter), the
higher resolution SVGA modes can also do fairly rapid updates, proportional
to the number of pixels (640 x 400 yields about 11 frames per second).

It's a little bit of work to do some of these things in Turbo C, because
BGI doesn't support all of the above. Some third party libraries for
Borland do more than BGI however... you can get a free demo disk for
Flash Graphics which does all the above, except Mode X, by sending me
some email or calling 800-397-7310 (or 208-263-7311). Don't forget to
ask about educational pricing when ordering.
