Turbo C++ is so cheap and so much more useable than the PD/SW C compilers that it is hard to justify not getting it. If you are really on a tight budget, there's Mix C for $20, an outstanding value, with a good debugger for another $20. That's about what you would have to pay for a book to use with the PD/SW Cs.
