gcc vs. commercial compilers

Has anybody actually done tests on the speed of optimized code put out
by gcc vs. commercial compilers? Would anybody care to comment?

I am interested in buying a compiler, but if gcc puts out production
quality code, I won't buy one, since I am only interested in command
line compiling optimized code.

Email would be appreciated.
