You might want to look at Watcom C. It comes with a Dos extender that allows you to work in flat memory model and still make dos and bios calls for i/o. Also there are a number of such extenders, both commercial and shareware, that will work with your compiler. I'm not sure if you can use them within Windows, but underneath all that VC++ gingerbread is a normal command line compiler; MSC 8.0. Watcom's debugger might work with their extender. I haven't used it so I'm not sure. A simpler approach that can be used in a few situations is to find the file unreal10.zip at some ftp site. It shows how to set up flat memory and run dos and dos programs with no problems. The program has to load within the 1 meg area because dos is limited to that, but it has all of memory to play with. The problem with it is that you can't run a program that goes into protected mode and you can't have a memory manager. Other than that it works just fine. I hope that helps.
