I was faced with the same thing. I was developing a software
package for the geophysics department over at Western university.
The seismic data sets that these people were using were just gigantic.
They wanted to be able to wave shape, generate the frequency spectrum
and perform a few manipulations which had to force the data set to be
resident in memory. I attempted the extended memory trick copying
large chunks of memory back and forth so that I could perform the
calculations that were needed. As I coded the software under dos I
was essentially developing along side some memory management routines.
Later I found that they had access to a Unix based OS and that memory
resources where not an issue. Well the development changed so
dramatically. I found it a pleasure to code under Linux. I wrote
the code so it could be easily just recompiled for any version of
Solaris.

I would suggest to just jump to linux and develop there then
to attempt to wrestle with DOS or Windows...

		Cheers
