MSDOS 3.3 Backup: Can it be restored under PCDOS 6.3 ?

Friend is upgrading his old Epson 386 running MSDOS to a new Osborne Pentium machine running PCDOS 6.3. He is a bit worried about transferring everything from the old to the new. How easily can it be done? He has a backup set created with MSDOS 3.3 backup. Is it possible to read this format with some sort of "restore" under PCDOS 6.3? (I guess he will get some sort of manual with the new gear, but he is anticipating problems :) I suggested he simply boot from a 3.3 floppy and use that RESTORE -- but this assumes the FAT etc. *is* the same under PCDOS 6.3 Is it? No doubt there are other options, such as using a serial port transfer, but that might take a while. Suggestions and cautions welcome. Thank you all for your interest, Ian S.

You think backing up and restoring an entire hard drive will take LESS time than a serial port transfer? My suggestion would be to go ahead with the serial port transfer (MS-DOS has Interlink, not sure what PC-DOS has, if any). If you don't have software that will talk back and forth, try getting a coy of LapLink (for windows or DOS) - it even comes with the cable! "Live as if you were to die tomorrow. The easiest way is probably to copy the 3.3 RESTORE program and use
SETVER to fool it into thinking it is running under DOS 3.3

Does PCDOS6.? have a backup facility, if so, just boot the Epson with a PCDOS floppy and run the backup from the floppy. Regards Stu.

(I guess : he will get some sort of manual with the new gear, but he is anticipating : problems :) That has always messed. No doubt you know that running backup/restore between different major versions won't happen. But lookup the SETVER instruction for DOS 6, and bring an UNBACKEDUP copy of backup/restore from your source system (DOS 3.3) use SETVER, and run the 3.3 restore on 6.3 Another guy suggests running DOS 6 backup from a floppy on the source (DOS 3.3) system, which is probably the best answer. At least twice I've done backups with DOS 3.3 and been unable to restore. I had to patch the disks with debug before I could load. The problem was a new file in a new directory when there was no space left on the backup diskette (bug), so it stored a 0-byte sized piece on the diskette, and started on the next one. All well and good, but restore didn't like that at all. Had to reboot, 'cos it went into a 'guru meditation' ... Backup with DOS 6.3 off floppy, I don't know how good that backup routine is, but it's real nice (MS bought it from someone else - it's not theirs) and 6 is bigger than 3. Later version, and 3rd party makes it a better bet than DOS 3.3 backup. I won't touch that one again. Choc Dee, Lance
