A customer of mine was advised by another supplier to locally adminstor the allocation of MAC addresses for new PCs being connected to workgroup 10BaseT hubs for access to NetWare only. I've stongly advised aginst this with arguments for being: o Original MAC addresses ensure uniqueness o Network Management s/w such as NMS can easily identify and report MAC addresess in use/user connected, etc. The only time I've seen MAC addresses being locally assigned (to over-ride the manufacturer's address) has been in IBM AS/400 environments where the IBM admin specifies on the host which MAC addresses can access the AS/400. What are the benefits of this being done and why don't they just use the originally assigned addresses? Thanks, Mike./ -- Mike Duffy Email: mike@mduffy.demon.co.uk Network Systems Consultant Mobile: 0973 411738 Specialist Computers Centres Fax: 01925 819939 #Standard disclaimers included
