To all, Recently I've upgraded my backup equipment and I'm getting the same if not slower backup performance. My impression is that the upgrade as listed below should improve backup speed, even though I've changed a few variables. Here's my old and new configuration: OLD NEW Backup server: Compaq Prosignia VS (486/66) Compaq Prosignia VS (486/66) running NetWare 4.1 running NetWare 4.1 SCSI card: Compaq Integrated 32-bit Fast-2 (53C710) Compaq Integrated 32-bit Fast-2 (53C710) Server Disk: Compaq DSP3053LS SCSI Fast-2 (490MB) Compaq DSP3053LS SCSI Fast-2 (490MB) Server memory: 48 MB 72 MB Backup drive: ADIC DAT (4mm) autochanger Compaq 15/30 GB DLT drive Backup software:Cheyenne ARCserve v5.01g Cheyenne ARCserve v6.0 Server network connection: FDDI FDDI Backup speed: Approx. 15-20 MB/min. Approx. 8-12 MB/min. (Approx. 12-14 MB/min. with Push Agent) I had to upgrade the DAT drives as I was consistently getting many write error no matter how much head cleaning I did or how many new tapes I bought and tried. I've increased the Maximum Service Processes, Minimum/Maximum Directory Cache Buffers, and Minimum/Maximum Packet Receive Buffers on my backup server as Cheyenne tech. support on their WWW server dictates. I've installed all Compaq, Cheyenne, and Novell patches so that the backup server is up-to-date. The servers I'm backing up are Compaq ProLiant 2000s with plenty of memory and approx. 120 users connected (drops down to maybe half that at night.) I have tried Cheyenne's suggestion of running a Copy job or disabling tape writes to see if the SCSI channel is overloaded. (It doesn't appear to be from this test.) Since I do see 100% utilization frequently during backups, I tried ARCserve v6.0 on a Pentium server (133 Mhz) yesterday and got better backup speed (14-17 MB/min.) and less utilization (average 45%). Can anyone make any suggestions? I thought ARCserve 6.0 and DLT drives would give me better backup performance. What are your thoughts? Please reply to pzocco@wesleyan.edu. Many thanks!
