Hi,
   We recently upgraded to Netware 4.1 from 4.01. We installed the 
relevant patches after the upgrade. Since then we have noticed that if our 
SYS: volume (a 2Gb Dec DSP3210) gets to 90% full, we often see periods of 100% 
utilisation when Compress/decompress threads are the major resource hogs and 
the system comes to a grinding halt. At the same time we get warnings on the 
console about "files are not being committed decompressed to volume SYS: due 
to lack of disk space." I realise that this is because of the server setting 
"Decompress Percent Disk Space Free to Allow Compression" which is set at the 
default of 10%. 

I understand why it is happening, but the performance degradation was never as 
great when this used to happen under Netware 4.01.

One application that really suffers under this scenario is Genstat 5.3. One of 
our statisticians has a very small job that she runs. If we have more than 10% 
space free on SYS:, this job takes 9 seconds, when free disk space is less 
than 10%, the same job takes 90 seconds.

Has anyone else noticed this sort of performance hit? Is there any way around 
it? As fast as we clear space off SYS:, it gets filled up again - I presume by 
decompressed files.
