EASY QUESTION!

Does anyone have a procedure to follow when the sys volume hard drive
crashes? I've got a good tape backup, but don't know where to go after
partioning the DOS portion of the drive. I'm interested in different
points of view, especially for various versions of Novell.

Thanks in advance.

Well, we had the same thing happen to us. We reinstalled Netware
after formatting the drive (ver 3.12 btw) and then, in order to get
our backup running, we had to rewrite the autoexec.ncf. So that is
basically my answer. Make sure you have a hard copy of your
autoexec.ncf, recreate it, by doing a "load install" and adding
whatever you need to it. We didn't have a tape backup, so I can't
answer that part, ours is an offsite backup. Sorry this is so vague.

You need to have server.exe, install, sbackup, smdr, etc, plus your disk
driver on the DOS partition so that you can load enough of NetWare to
create the SYS volume and reload from tape.

The best form of NetWare disaster recovery I have come across is a product
called Replica from Stac. It not only backups up the NetWare volumes but
also the partition table and DOS partition. If the server disk crashes, all
you need to do is put in a new disk and boot off the disaster recovery
floppies that Replica creates, and it will automatically recover the entire
server.

Assuming that your good backup includes all NetWare specific information
(trustee rights, bindery or NDS, etc.) and such, what I do is make the DOS
partition, start SERVER.EXE, load Install.NLM, make the NetWare partition,
make the volumes, load *.LAN and bind IPX, then restore from backup.
