Regarding the OS/2 Warp Unleashed 2nd edition book; our Publisher has
decided not to publish the 2nd edition. We were having some problems
with the lead authors and do not feel the 2nd edition will sell as

Certainly hope you get it finished and published. I make weekly trips

specifically for Warp 4.

Ya know, it is possible that 2 different animals are being discussed here.
Was there ever a "followup" to the V3 vintage Warp unleashed planned?? I
mean one that was "different" than the V4 vintage Warp Unleashed??
The thing is,, I have no reason to "disbelieve" anyone who has posted in
this thread. All parties involved have certain "credentials" that make
them generally reliable sources, so, I am thinking there is a "book
version mismatch" going on here. What's the chances of that?

If you don't know him from a hole in the wall, you haven't
been following the OS/2 newsgroups for very long. I'd say
that John Summerfield has established a reputation for
being someone who knows what he's talking about.

Certainly we have a contradiction here, and it's a bit of
a mystery how it happened. But I don't think David and
John are calling each other liars. There's no need for
this sort of over-reaction.

Sorry, I just can't let this message go without a comment.

I've been following this group for quite some time, and have NEVER
know John Summerfield to post FUD. He is one of the more informed and
helpful posters, here, and to make a comment like the above is totally
uncalled for.

Apparantley, there are conflicting messages from the Author and the
Publisher. (BTW, I've never known Mr. Moskowitz to post FUD either).

It serves no one to speculate on what is going on, at this point. And
it CERTAINLY serves no useful purpose to lash out at someone who, by
your own admission, you "don't know from a hole in the wall". The last time
someone took it upon himself to lash out at an OS/2 user who was just
trying to be helpful, we all almost lost the "Must Have" site.

And Esther Schindler doesn't "hang out" here as often as she used to
because of some IDIOT who didn't care for the fact that she was
affiliated with the media.

If we drive out all the users who are willing to help those in need,
the groups will become totally unuseful, and you'll all have to call
IBM Tech Support to get your answers. (Perish the thought).
And besides, I've seen "Crocodile Dundee" and I wouldn't want to piss
off an Aussie <g>.

I support John Summerfield for all the help he has given us, and I
support David Moskowitz for all the WONDERFUL information in the
"Unleashed" books (as well as all the device driver development he has
been involved in). I would hope that the letter that John recieved was
in error. But I'm certainly not going to fault him for posting it for
all of us to read.

<rant-mode off....sorry>

He's well known offline and I respect his writing (OS/2 Unleashed and
Warp Unleashed are the two best OS/2 books I've ever purchased), but I
have to admit that I don't know the posting that was made here in his
name from a hole in the wall. His e-mail address and his writing style
don't grace this part of Usenet all that often (which is unfortunate,
IMhO), and I doubt he possesses omnipotence about SAMS either. :-)

For that matter, I don't think I know you (though I've seen your rather
ascerbic responses from time to time on c.o.o.*), tho I think the name
"Ira Wechsler" rings a bell from the BBS nets (RIME or Fido or ILink or
somewhere) maybe 4-5 years ago. Would that be you?

Do you normally go around slamming respected people you don't know?

>If he says the project is alive and well, that is the case.

Sure, but that fact (by itself) doesn't necessarily imply that SAMS will
be publishing the end results of the project.

I assume there's no reason for the status quo to change, but that is a
pure assumption on my part, not factually based. He (and we) will find
out in due time (since he's gone and checked himself, apparently).

John is a very good source of information, as you would realize if you
spent much time in the c.o.o.* hierarchy, and I take exception to your
behavior here. I certainly realize everyone has the right to be an
asshole if they wish, particularly on Usenet where it seems to be a
goal for some, but IMSNShO there are *far* more deserving targets. :-)

No, actually I'd rather see a clear solution to the problem here rather
than simply tossing ill-considered flames out at everyone around.

What kind of crap is this? John doesn't deserve that type of childish post
simply because he has some info which is different from David's. John's had a
lot of useful posts in these newsgroups and I would hate to see him "get
lost." There are just too few useful presences in comp.o.o.* these days to
take this type of attitude. Relax a bit and try to realize that a company as
large as SAMS publishing may have one unit spouting one line, while another
unit spouts an opposite line, not to mention the probability that they may
have changed positions over time. Your overly simplistic either-or scenario
just doesn't wash. I myself hope the book gets published. It was invaluable
to me in dealing with Warp 3.

Intersting that they told you and didn't tell us. Also, our contact at
SAMS was someone else (the acqusitions editor).

Rather than debate this, here. I've put in a call to them, directly, to
get the "word."

Um, the 2nd edition??

I bought the 3rd edition in 1995. Is this a case really slow snail mail or
what? :)

Have you got something that reference's the 4th edition??

Also, is this 'letter' an actual letter thru the actual mail on actual paper
with a real and verifiable letterhead and signature or just an email that
could be from anyone??

SAMS is indeed the publisher, and it's possible that miscommunication
is occurring here, but why automatically assume that the e-mail which
John posted above is not authentic or is otherwise incorrect?

I don't think we have enough hard information to substantiate EITHER
conclusion. It may come out (and I certainly hope it does!) or not.

This is not law school nor philosophy 101. David Moskowitz is among the most
respected writers and consultants in the os/2 market sector. If he says the
project is alive and well, that is the case. Perhaps you would rather spend time
counting angels on a pin head.

Super bummer, I pre-ordered the book with J3. I just got an e-mail
telling me that the publisher has decided that they will not be
publishing it.

Mine says OS/2 Warp Unleashed, Deluxe Edition but inside on

I apologize to Mr. Summerfield and the other users here for my obvious overreaction to Mr. Summerfield's
post. I do still feel that Mr. Moskowitz being the main contributor and being local
here is more apt to have the most accurate information. My rudeness was uncalled

He's well known offline and I respect his writing (OS/2 Unleashed and
Warp Unleashed are the two best OS/2 books I've ever purchased), but I
have to admit that I don't know the posting that was made here in his
name from a hole in the wall. His e-mail address and his writing style
don't grace this part of Usenet all that often (which is unfortunate,
IMhO), and I doubt he possesses omniscience about SAMS either.

>Perhaps you would rather spend time counting angels on a pin head.

No, actually I'd rather see a clear solution to the problem here rather
than simply tossing ill-considered flames out at everyone around.

Interesting, did you notice which edition of the book this email that you

The add is not for the second edition, It is for the FOURTH! Maybe

I guess you don't hang around any of the c.o.o.* newsgroups - or you've
never had to go to John for help with LAN or Web Server or Sendmail

Hi David - I snipped most of the rhetoric for brevity's sake ... I'm no
editor :) - but maybe you should talk to John about including some of his
excellent material in your book. Value added indeed. Maybe SAMS didn't
like his writing style- I know that your style sells well, maybe you could
"couch" John's stuff in a more saleable fashion.

Not good. I have "OS/2 Warp UNLEASHED" by Moskowitz, Kerr & others shipped
by SAMS to me by way of sample as to the base material from which to
    work.

A few pages in, it says
   "Copyright 1995 by Sams Publishing."
   THIRD EDITION

The fourth edition is to cover Warp 4.

Here is what I now believe
As David says, the book is proceeding.
It's not surprising David hadn't heard of my involvement as disuccsions
    regarding completed.
SAMS decided for resons they chose not to divulge to me that they did
nt wish to use my services after all.
Cari Skaggs, representing SAMS Publishing, told me a story other than
    the truth.

My dealings with SAMS have not been entirely heartwarming. I hope their
other authors have a better experience than mine.

I'm sure that David will confirm Cari is a contact at Sams. My feeling is
that Sams decided to put me off and chose to lie to me.

I do have other letters from Sams on this and other matters: I prefer not
    to publish them here.

Those who've followed my postings on other matters or seen my web pages
will acknowlege me as an enthusiastic user of OS/2.

I believe that the more good books there are on OS/2 the better off we all
are because it amounts to favourable publicity for OS/2.

However, the fact remains that I received the above letter from Cari and
accepted it in good faith that it meant the book was off.

The fact that David had not heard of my involvement is no surprise as we
were still discussing the extent of my involvement: there was, in my
mind, no doubt that I would be involved. I would expect Davcid to hear
about it after we'd agreed the material I was best able to cover.

I have here a copy of the previous edition, consigned by on Rhonda Biddy
on Jan 24. I have no doubt someone else can confirm that such a person
exists and is in a postition to make such a consignment.

Before anyone else calls me a liar, I suggest you ask Cari why I'd think
    the book was called off.

As far as my sanity is concerned, I THINK I'm sane, but then I've never
had occasion to have a sanity-check.

Apparantley, John Summerfield was, in fact, correct. David Moskowitz,
apparantley, was the last to find out.

OS/2 Warp Unleashed 4th Edition has been cancelled by the publisher.
Main reason cited was the they (Sam's) felt that OS/2 was a dying
operating system, and there was not enough market for the book.

Perhaps a few (thousand) well thought out e-mails to
cskaggs@sams.mcp.com would help them to realize that OS/2 is NOT a
dying operating system, and there IS a market for this book, if they
should choose to publish it.

(Please, no flames. Flaming Sam's would only serve to reflect
negatively on OS/2 users).

J3's Web Site has been updated, and there is no longer a link to
pre-order the book.

Here is an e-mail message I recieved today. (I had pre-ordered the
book from J3).

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Mar 1997 16:28:51 -0500

 Hello,

Rumor had it that the publication of OS/2 Warp Unleashed, 4th
Edition had been cancelled at the eleventh hour, until I was able
to confirm or deny this statement I had to take it at face value,
   that of a rumor.

Unfortunately, this rumor has become true. I was just notified
minutes ago by our SAM's Publishing Representative that they (SAM's)
will not be publishing OS/2 Warp Unleashed, 4th Ed. for a couple of
reasons, one being that they feel the OS/2 market place is dying.

This is another sad chapter in the OS/2 history book. My
apologies to anyone that has been inconvenienced. Our Web site
will be updated to reflect this new information.

  Sincerely,
  -Jim Ames, President

I think the authors ought to just forget the publisher and make
an electronic version(probably have to rename it), and ship it via
the web or on a CD. Electronic copies are much more convenient.

However well-justified that opinion seemed, it now seems I was
    informed correctly.

My sympathies to David M who, it seems, hasn't been as well-treated a I'd
    wish to be.

There was some speculation about edition numbers; Cari's letter mentioned
the second edition. I think the explanation is rather simple: though
my Warp Unleashed says E3, it's the FIRST for WARP. E1 & E2 were for
    OS/2.

Someone also expressed the home David M might find an alternative
publisher. As SAMS claims copyright, I don't think this would be so
simple. A new edition will inevitably cut into whatever market for E3
that remains so SAMS would doubtless require as much compensation as
    they could obtain.

Whether David could rewrite his material in a timely fashion and in a
manner such as would avoid risk of lawsuit I doubt.

This is very very sad news and I encourage all who care to email SAMS
publishing with a thoughtful request to reconsider (address above in quoted
stuff). On top of that, I was wondering if those who know David Moskowitz may
be able to persuade him to seek out another publisher, or to help him find
another publisher, in the event that SAMS sticks with it's current position to
not publish the book. I know that I'll buy it, either off the rack or off
someone's Web page. The Warp 3 version was incredibly invaluable to me. It
helped me, as well as did the great folks who passed on advice in these
newsgroups and the great support for OS/2 on the net (what was then Gary
Hammer's Must Have site, the Warp Pharmacy, Stupid OS/2 Tricks, just too many
to recount here) through many trials and tribulations

In the end, I would hate to see David's current efforts not see the light of
day.

You'd be wasting your time. Instead why not suggest that they assign the
rights to the book to a non-profit organization like, say, POSSI, which
could publish the book, maybe in a looseleaf 8.5" x 11" format and make
some money, which can then be used for projects which benefit us all?
Wouldn't that have a much higher-percentage chance of success than
browbeating a reluctant publisher to invest in a product in which he
has so little faith?

Just a thought.

Alan Pilcher

They should work for Microsoft, because so far Windows 95 has not sold as well as
Windows 3.1, so they shouldn't publish another version.

Dear netters,
just as a sidemark: Here in Germany there are 3 Warp4 titles out by
now. Each of them is a >800 pages tome, introductory to medium level,
but surely below the level of "Unleashed".

Can anybody explain why it is possible to publish Warp4 titles here
but in the US the OS/2 market is so dyed out that SAM's cannot afford
to publish a book that has been known as THE top quality OS/2 title?

If OS/2 could 'walk on water' the front page headline in
InfoWorld would read "OS/2 CAN'T SWIM!!!".

If a CD version will be produced, I will definitely buy it!
