Ultimail dud -- help

Hi,
I received a large email under Ultimail Lite (Warp 3)

The session closed normally (I didn't delete the email).

But when I started Ultimail the next day, the
inbox wouldn't come up, and none of the mail
items in the mail box would appear.

Furthermore, because the inbox won't come up,
I can't send email.

   Has anyone had this problem?

   How did you fix it?

Thanks,
Robin

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but using anything except UglyMail
will be an improvement. This product was bad when released and did not
improve with age. Wish I could offer some help in migration, but
perhaps someone on the list knows of some tools to help you get to
something like Netscape Messenger (if nothing else).

Yes, and dozens of others for most of a year when I still used Ulti-Mail.

> How did you fix it?

Downloaded, tried out, then paid for three licenses for Nick Knight's
superb MR2/ICE mailer/newsreader.

Nowadays I have MR/2-ICE sort incoming and outgoing mail into over a dozen
folders, forward my incoming faxes to me (with Keller Group's PMFAX ) and
automaticaly get rid of over 95% of all SPAM. In addition, the mail is
saved as plain text files - easily accessed by other apps - which
Ulti-Mail was not at all helpful at doing!

Saves me lots of time, and the license fees for these products were money
well spent.

YMMV!

I fixed it by going to Post Road Mailer. If you hunt around the
subdirectory tree, you'll eventually find your mail messages, but it's a
painful process. For a long time now, the first thing I've done on new
installs of OS/2 is to remove Ultimail.

Best,

I haven't had this particular problem, all my large emails
have come down OK. Sometimes UltiMail changes its
settings, and it sounds like it's looking for an odd mail
supplier or something. Try these...

When you're logged on to your ISP, start UltiMail a few times,
thereby trying to force it to your ISP.

Check \tcpip\umail\umail.err for errors, looking for clues to
what it's done.

See the \tcpip\umail\umail.nnn and umail.pro, and umailsrv.nnn
and umailsrv.pro files? The .pro are the current working
configuration files, and the .001+ are the discarded copies.
Figure out where Umail upgraded the .pro, and copy the old
working .nnn into .pro. NOTE: Copy aside your current .pro
files first and be prepared to put them back, this is
extremely icky going.

The posters who answered obliquely are bashing and putting
up commercial advertising. I think they grep on UltiMail.

You are the only one who resents the millions of OS2 users who deservedly
abandoned Ultimail. In fact when I posted that I had abandoned it in
early 1995, you complained that I was IBM bashing. Get a life.

The software stinks and we all know it but you.

This is similar to a recurring problem I have had in
UltiMail, namely that the folders will disappear. The only sure
way for me to fix it, is to re-boot, but if I can open up large
folders, sometimes I can crash UltiMail, which will allow me to
then re-start the program, and view all the folders. I have
tried many ways to circumvent this problem, but the best
solution so far appears to be to move all the InBox messages to
a different folder before you open them.

If you can't open the InBox after re-booting, it is probably
an INI corruption problem, and I could suggest doing some INI
maintenance, or maybe try running "\tcpip\umail\DESTWPS.CMD",
re-boot, and then run "\tcpip\umail\MAKEWPS.CMD". If you can
open the InBox, but it is empty, and there are actual messages
in "\tcpip\umail\Server\InBox", then you can run :

[E:\tcpip\umail]makeidx ??
IBM UltiMail Index File Builder
-------------------------------

Syntax:
MAKEIDX ? | directory userid [/LOGO | /NOLOGO] [/QUIET | /NOQUIET]
        [/DELETE | NODELETE]

directory root directory of the tree for which index files
should be built; all directories under this root
will have an index file built for them
userid userid of user who owns this mailstor directory
LOGO | nologo display initial logo and ask for confirmation
VERBOSE | noverbose type file names as they are processed
DELETE | nodelete delete unburst letters after bursting them

Description:
MAKEIDX, or Make Index builds the necessary index files for
the UltiMail database. Most information in the index files is
automatically recoverable. However, some user specified attributes,
such as user given Folder names are not automatically recovered.

BTW, I am finally abandoning UltiMail after five years, due
to this problem combined with me not wanting to configure
sendmail.uml to allow different smtp and pop addresses to beat
the mail relay impediments, and to change sendmail to allow fast
mail spam and and also the difficulty with configuring UltiMail
for my new systems. I still like the interface the best, but
the problems overtook the advantages.
