This is just an idea off the top of my head, and I'm not using my OS/2 PC
at the moment so I may be way off, but...

How about making a copy of the Desktop.  Right click on an open area and
make a copy of it.  When you set your son up to use the PC make sure this
copy is open.  I'd think that you could customize this copy just for him,
taking out icons he shouldn't see.  I would think that if he messes up the
copy you'll still be left with the original, no?  Please correct me if
I've overlooked something - it seems to make sense to me though!
