The following is a letter I sent to Origin games yesterday, as well as a
reply from Origin:
My Letter:
I'm not sure if I'm directing this request (complaint) to the right
department,but here it goes.
The news that I've read on different sites on the net that ULtima IX
will be Win95 only upsets me. This means I'm out in the cold, as well as
a great number of people who have decided against "upgrading" to said
operating system.
It seems to me that far more people do not have win95, versus those
that do. Why not just base it on dos? Everyone can use dos:
Win3.1,Win95,OS/2, and linux can all run dos based games. If you do
decide to run your games through a 32 bit system (which is not a bad
idea), why not port it to all of them? There are far more Os/2, MacOS,
and Linux users than win95 people, and it appears to me (although I
haven't taken a survey or anything) that OS/2 and win NT both have far
more growth potential than the O.S. you seem to be hellbent to support.
Please consider broadening yor scope as to the platforms that will run
yor games; the days of the single operating system are over.
Reply:
We're sorry that you're not happy with the decision to produce Ultima IX
for Win 95 only. Unfortunately, we don't have the resources to port it to
all the platforms we'd like. Just as we have received complaints, we've
also received many, many more requests for Windows 95 native software.
Richard/ORIGIN Marketing
I think that there are more of us (OS/2,MAC,Linux users) than there are
of them (Win95 users). Let's all write Origin and show them that there
is support for other operating systems (namely OS/2). The address is
"marketing@origin.ea.com".
tpthoms@mail.fia.com
P.S. I don't know much about DAPIE; could Origin use something like
this? Some of you computer gurus might want to explain it to them if
they can.

And even though I believe the OS/2 market is much bigger than these companies seem to admit, the bigger problem is the stores at the other end who DON'T and or WON'T stock OS/2 titles. Our best buy in Topeka, KS carries 0 OS/2 titles that's I've found, Wal Mart doesn't, neither does software etc. and on and on and on. This is a gripe, as I like the platform. But It's also a gripe for the gaming company. When I walk into Software Etc. they always have signs up for the latest, greatest Win95 game coming. They've never stalked (or most of them haven't heard of) GalCiv. That's a bigger problem. If you want OS/2 to succeed in this market, bitching at the game company may accomplish some, but not the same that getting people to actually BUY those games will do. Win95 owners, are, despite what MS says, mainly gamer folks. That's most of the people I know who use it. They buy games. Get 1 OS/2 game to show up on PC Gamer/CGW/Entertainmaint PC magazine's top 10 sellers list, just once, and it'll do a lot for the gaming world. So, out of support for OS/2.. you want more OS/2 games, start a surge. Make a OS/2 game a huge seller (GalCiv sold a lot, but not in huge opening week kind of things that attract attention of places like WSJ) Chris.

Just so I know I'm not alone on this, why don't you all send me a copy of your mail message to Origin. It would be nice to see what you all think. thanks. tpthoms@mail.fia.com

Yes, but there *is* progress. The local CompUSA has about 10 OS/2 titles, which, while *nothing* compared to the IB catalog, is still 8-10 titles more than most places carry. >But It's also a gripe for the gaming company. When I walk into >Software Etc. they always have signs up for the latest, greatest >Win95 game coming. They've never stalked (or most of them haven't >heard of) GalCiv. That's a bigger problem. I've actually heard of places that have heard of GalCiv, but most don't stock it. One guy I talked to at an OS/2-less store (except for the OS itself, which most places stock) admitted to using Warp herself, and that she had been trying to convince her employer to carry at least a few major OS/2 titles. >If you want OS/2 to succeed in this market, bitching at the game company >may accomplish some, but not the same that getting people to actually >BUY those games will do. Get 1 OS/2 game to show up on PC Gamer/CGW/Entertainmaint >PC magazine's top 10 sellers list, just once, and it'll do a lot >for the gaming world. You're partially right. Not only do we need to speak out, we also need to put our money where our mouths are. When we ask that outlets carry OS/2 software, we had better be prepared to buy them when they do. >So, out of support for OS/2.. you want more OS/2 games, start a surge. >Make a OS/2 game a huge seller (GalCiv sold a lot, but not in huge >opening week kind of things that attract attention of places like >WSJ). Well, by OS/2 standards it *did* become a "huge seller." Maybe part of that was pent-up demand; who knows? But the fact is that GalCiv has cracked some *overall* "top game" lists (not just top OS/2 game, which it clearly is), which means it can't be totally ignored. The more "must have, killer apps" OS/2 has, the better off we are (and apparently, the better off Stardock is :) ). -- Tim Irvin, irvi2187@sundance.sjsu.edu, CS Grad Student, San Jose State Univ. Have you ever noticed that competition in OS/2-market is almost zero? If you make good software it is very easy to make money with OS/2 software. Arto -- Team OS/2
