G'Day!

One thing I have never been able to find out how to do under OS/2 is
to change the program associated with data files for EVERY instance of
thet type of file. I know how to change it for one file, say one .GIF
file, but how do I go about changing the association for EVERY .GIF
file?

Thanks very much for any replies, e-mail is especially appreciated.

Go to the _program object_ you want to use to open the type of file. Open
the properties menu and select the notebook tab for "Associations". There
you can define the file types and extensions you wish to use for the
program. With OS/2 you can have multiple programs open the same file type -
unlike Windows.

Hope this helps.

I think he wants to change the default association.

I haven't found an easy way but here is a brief (I hope not
too biref) description of the hard way.

Go to every program object that is associated with that
particular file type (both by extension and file type).
Open the properties notebooks and remove the type that is
giving you trouble. Close all the notebooks and reboot.

After rebooting open the notebook for the program object you
want to be the default and reassociate. Close the notebook.
Open the notebooks for the rest or the program objects you
want associated and reassociate.

That should do it except for objects that you set the
default on the menu page.

There _is_ an easier way to do this (besides using AssoEdit).

Programs are listed on a file's 'Open as' menu in the order they were
associated with the file's type or extension. The oldest association
is at the top and is the default; the most recentLy added is at the
bottom of the list. You can rotate the list by going to the first
program's notebook, removing the association, then *immediately*
re-adding it. This program will become the last item on the menu.
The item that had been second will move to the top spot and become
the default association.

BTW... Since associations are updated immediately, a reboot really
isn't needed; it simply updates the icons used by some of the files.
