I have been having REAL problems installing Merlin on a machine with a 1.6Gig IDE drive plus a Soundblaster 16 PnP with Hex CD-ROM. The problem fall into 2 groups: Group 1: ------- I get as far as the last part of the install (don't ask how I know this, I just do) where a whole lot of configuration is going on while those 3 or 4 inane screens (advertising VT etc) are being repeatedly displayed and the status line shows what's happening while those 2 small black and white "wheels" are spinning. At that point, the installation FREEZES but the display screens continuing cycling, the "wheels" in the status line keep spinning but no other information shows in the status line. SO EVENTUALLY I CRT/ALT/DEL and when it reboots, it looks like everything is installed and functioning. UNTIL I realize that none of the TCP/IP (modem) stuff has been installed - no drivers, documentation files NOTHING - not even a directory called TCPIP! This EXACT same problem recurred several times - each time starting with a newly reformatted HPFS partition. Group 2 ------- After the umpteenth occurrence of the above scenario, the next attempt at install (and each of many thereafter) looses all knowledge of my CD-ROM drive at some point (different on each subsequent installation attempt) during the installation. In desperation, I even tried placing the files OS2CDROM.DMD, IBM1S506.ADD and IBMCDIDE.FLT which work perfectly well in my Warp 3 installation onto installation Disks 1 & 2. But this also didn't work - the installation program still refuses to "see" my CD-ROM drive. Any and ALL help is greatly appreciated! Thanks. I ended up installing Warp v3 + fixpak 17, then copied these files to the Warp v4 installation diskettes. ibm1s506.add ibmidecd.flt os2cdrom.dmd os2dasd.dmd These are the same files in ATAPI.ZIP, but Warp v3 + fp17 is newer. One or two of them is one more than one of the Installation Diskettes, so check them all. However after installing Warp v4, I also ended up with no network, tcp/ip or java installed. The javaos2 directory was there, but no files. This is easy to correct, just download Netscape and install it, it comes with a newer Java (v1.0.2) than Warp v4 anyway. TCP/IP can be installed from the Warp v4 CDROM directly. I forget the directory (cid\?), but try a search for base?.zip files on the CDROM, these are the tcp/ip archives. Full Networking support I don't want installed anyway. >Any and ALL help is greatly appreciated! > >Thanks. > >George Wiley >School of Computer & Information Science >University of South Australia >Adelaide, Australia -- Phil Crown pcrown@airmail.net http://web2.airmail.net/pcrown/
