I have a 256 color 40x40 BMP that i'd like to turn into an ICON.
My attempts with OS/2's ICON Editor, using cut and paste, pallete,
and various device forms, leave me with a 256 color 40x40 icon that
looks 16color, and loses the nice color gradations in the bmp.
Any pointers on which is the proper form to use and steps to get
what I want? I didnt see anything specific on Hobbes to do the
conversion, or did i miss it? Thanks

(Am now registered and awaiting free upgrade to v0.93 -- where is it, guys? <g>) I just tried an experiment: took a JPEG file; selected an area (380 pixels square) containing the image I wanted; shrank it to 40x40; converted colour to 256 bit; output image as an OS/2 Warp bitmap (you can also choose OS/2 2.1 or Win3.1); went out to the system and dragged the bitmap from its directory into the icon field of the settings notebook of a testfile; and -- bingo! -- Andrew Stephenson

First load the bitmap. Save the palate with some arbitrary name. Copy the image to the clip board. From the file meny create a new icon. Go to the devices menu and add the appropriate type (I forgot the name) Load the previously saved palate. Paste the image. You might have to transpose the last two steps. Hello,
PMView 0.93 can do this for you. It supports more than 30 different file
formats and lets you convert to WinICO, OS/2 1.2 ICO and OS/2 2.0 ICO
The beta version of PMView 0.93 is currently only available to registered
users. The official version of PMView 0.92 can be downloaded from PMView's
web pages: http://www.wilmington.net/bmtmicro/pmview
Best regards,
Peter Nielsen (pnielsen@abo.fi)
