HI I am looking for suggestions upgrading my CD-ROM and sound card. Now I have a Sound Blaster 16 MCD with a Mitsumi 2x hanging off it. I will be giving this set up to my sister for her computer and upgrading mine. I also have a Adeptec 2940 SCSI controller that is running my hard drive and I will be keeping. And my mother board has a EIDE controller that is disabled as of right now. I was thinking about getting a Toshiba 3701 (???) 6x SCSI and hang it off my Adeptec 2940. I would replace my Sound Blaster 16 MCD with a Sound Blaster 32 AWE Value Edition. I have a few questions: 1) I have not found a driver for the Toshiba 3701. Will it work under Warp? Will it work at 6x Speed? What driver do I use. How do I install it. 2) Does the Sound Blaster 32 AWE Value Edition work well under Warp? Can I use the same drivers that I have now for my Sound Blaster 16 MCD? If not how do I set it up. 3) Is there a better/cheaper solution? Is there a way to use a 8x IDE with out messing up the Adeptec 2940? Could I get a Creative Labs 8x Bundle with lost of "free" CD's and get it to work?? Any and all comments welcome. PS Please copy my E-mail if it is not a problem because I sometimes miss things on the news groups. Thanks -- Thanks Kenneth L. I don't have any personal experience with this particular Toshiba drive, but I
would be surprised if it didn't work, perhaps even with one of the in-the-box
Toshiba drivers, even if they're not explicitly labelled to support the 3701.
If it works at all, it ought to work at it's rated speed; certainly your
Adeptec 2940 is a very able SCSI card.

Better than for me to answer here, check the Sound Card FAQ link that appears
on the UVA unofficial OS/2 page, http://poe.acc.virginia.edu/~cjg4t/warp.html.
The FAQ has a complete rundown on sound cards.

You won't mess up the 2940 by also running an IDE peripheral. You can
certainly do the job cheaper, but as to better . . .

You are used to proprietary and you are moving to standardized equipment. The worst problem you may have is finding an audio cable that will connect between the cdrom and the sound card (to carrry cd audio). I'd pick the 6x scsi over the 8x atapi though that is just me (G) You shouldn't have any troubles installing either though you will have to load the atapi stuff. If you use dos this means you must load your scsi drivers and the atapi drivers in <1M. It isn't such a big deal in os/2 itself. Then again if you don't require aspi for other devs it shouldn't really matter (ie =< 2 HD, and no scsi tape, scanner, etc) I assume the AWE 32 V is a good os/2 sound card as there is little bad I have seen though I have no personal experience with it. If the current sound card meets your needs you could keep it and buy your sister one of the comp show no name cards for ~50$ (assuming she only runs dos/win) that has the mx port on it. Just an idea (maybe a bad one). Running Warp Connect & Linux striving for a no "WIN" situation! Steve Watson swatson@infi.net

Hi Ken... If your mother board supports direct connection of the CD-ROM to it, that is probably the easiest way to go. I have a SB16 card, and my CD-ROM is attached to the secondary EIDE cable as the master drive. I tell my AMI bios that there is a CD-ROM on the secondary EIDE, and Voila! Anything and everything can see the CD-ROM. No muss, no fuss, no drivers, etc. This is something to consider if your mother board will supprort it. - k.
