SB - Voice Modem conflict HELP!

Hi.

I have a problem. I have an old 8-bit soundblaster card and am trying to set up my PC to take voicemail. When I installed a Zoltrix 14,4 modem that does voice and ran an OS/2 voicemail app (The Answering Machine), I got dumped out of Warp with a TRAP 000d when I had the software 'test' the modem. Rebooting from the exception was OK, but COM2 had dissappeared. (Cold boot brought it back). After some thought, I yanked the SB card and tried again, and the test worked ok. Anybody have any ideas? My SB is at IRQ5 and i/o base 220. I had exactly the same experience with a VIVA 14,4 modem. (Both modems set for COM2, IRQ3.)

I haven't tried (but will next) changing the I/O base on the SB card from 220 to something else, but I have some software that won't recognise the SB if its not at 220, so even if that works, I won't be much farther ahead. There doesn't appear to be any settings or docs for the modem that even mention an I/O address. Anybody know anything about how these silly modems work or have ideas of what's wrong or what to do next?

Thanks for any input.

Michael.

Only speaking as the deaf ear this problem fell on before from a friend, I'd
say your sound card IRQ is conflicting. The voicemail modem cards have their
own SB clone onboard, and it uses IRQ 5 in most cases, assuming your SB card
follows Creative's original recommendation to use IRQ 7. Since most SB (and
clone) owners have had difficulty with their sound card and printer on the
same IRQ, Creative modified their position to recommend IRQ 5, normally used
for LPT2.

Now, I can't say you'll not have problems putting your SB back to IRQ 7, but I
had the need to do this - three active COM ports requires three IRQs - and
have had no problems yet. In fact, using Windows (until I get OS/2 fine
tuned), I've used my 8-bit SB to both sample and play back while the print
manager was printing, no problems were noted.

Lastly, don't change the DMA address, or your DRQ (should be 1) because lots
of programmers hard code this address, only checking your environment variable
for the IRQ.

Cheers
Tom
