The only reason >I bought the coax was because I thought it was going to be very hard to buy >so=called crossover UTP cable. Have I made another mistake. Yes, to the THICK net question part. Both a larger diffent cable are required as well as a special terminator connector device... Here, you can buy the special cross-over cable for nothing more than a regular patch cable... or more or less that... >How do you make a card use the the thin ethernet port rather than the thick >port? If you have the RIGHT driver for your card, it will either ASK you which media you want to use and configure everything for your choice, or, in some cases, it can AUTOMATICALLY select which one is plugged into the NIC card. The THIN cable uses a BNC connctor; the THICK cable uses a DB shell connector, and the TN uses a telephone-line like snap in plug. IT is tje job of the card DRIVER to set things up so you can used the right media port. If you don't have the correct driver, you likely may not get the card to ever select the right media, or any media! >Simon Simon.. I guess I didnn't make it clear enough.. I gave up on thin net with RG-58 cable! In my case, I *COULD have continued with it, once I got the correct drivers for the cards. But, while playing and learning what was going wrong, I decided to go buy a cheap hub. Here they are only about $30-40 or so. I had several computers to try and wanted a cable modem anyway. Because I had Kingsport stuff and good experience with it, I opted for the Kingsport hub. Instead of going to the older 10baseT cable, the difference between it an CAT-5 was only a dollar or so per cable more, so I used CAT 5. You can't mix them, so said. I had observed as you have, that I could ping each card and box just fine, but no card could see beyond its nose across the network! The funny part was the entire system, cards, boxes, thin-net, all worked just fine on a DOS NETBIOS network!! It just wouldn't work under OS/2! As soon as I plugged in the CAT-5 and hooked it to the hub, I changed the driver selection to TN and POOF! Instant success. Later on, after I got the driver deal all worked out, I went back and tried the RG-58 cable connection on one box against the available cable port on the Lingsport hub. It works there! In my case, regardless of WHAT type media I was selecting, and despite that the test setup said the card was installed right (It worked in DOS, recall?), OS/2 was seeing the card as THICK net. The large cable requires a special adapter that plugs into a tri-media card with a smiall BB-shell connector. No matter WHAT I did, the card was being "seen" as THICK net and, of course, with no THICK net cabling.. it can't see beyond it's nose! At this point, using the right drivers et. al., I even have more than one network card in one box and it all is working... Maybe this helps explain it all... //----------------------------- Mike.Luther@ziplog.com Mike.Luther@f3000.n117.z1.fidonet.org
