One of our customers has a Novell network with a shared printer attached. He would like for our OS/2 turnkey PC to use his networked printer. So we'll need to install Novell Netware client software, add a network card, etc. I have the following questions: 1) How much additional RAM will be consumed by the device drivers, resident processes, etc.? 2) How does licensing work? We are responsible to see that our machines have legally licensed copies of all software. I know that the client software itself is free, but is there some way to verify or document that the client site has permission to use it on the additional PC's? 3) What kinds of changes will its installation make to the system? For example, does it add device drivers to config.sys, desktop objects to the desktop, resident processes to config.sys, etc.? 4) Are there any known problems if it will need to coexist with Lan Server 3.0 and IBM's TCP/IP? Thanks for any help. - Keith -- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Keith Bennett Bennett Business Solutions, Inc. I don't know, but I have been running OS/2 on my work PC connected to our Novell 3.11 LAN for over a year with no problem. The Netware Client software I had to get from Novell via FTP (though it is supposed to be included in Warp Connect, I think), and after a complex but flawless install, I was able to connect to our LAN with no problem. It took awhile to get used to the OS/2 PM versions of most (but not all) of the Novell utils. (I wish I could still RCONSOLE!). Bottom line is that it works fine, and I don't know the answer to your first question -- how much RAM each driver takes up. : 2) How does licensing work? I think this is spelled out in the documentation, if you want to print it out for legal reasons. : 3) What kinds of changes will its installation make to the system? : For example, does it add device drivers to config.sys, desktop : objects to the desktop, resident processes to config.sys, etc.? Yes, it adds device drivers etc. to config.sys, but it puts them in an un- missable rem **** NETWARE **** section so you know what's been added. Yes, it adds a folder called NETWORK to the desktop, which contains an icon of your server. Click on the server to see the Novell volumes on the server. I created a shadow of the server on my desktop so I can log in and out easily. You also get Netware Tools, which is where you map drive letters to network drives, printer ports to Novell print queues, and user lists. As I mentioned above, it doesn't duplicate ALL the Novell utilities, but you do have all the necessities. Good luck (you won't need too much!) Chris cdean@site.gmu.edu

If all I have is Warp 3.0 and Novell Netware 4.0 Workstation for OS/2, will this allow connection to our 3.1x servers at work? I did a Netware Requestor setup a number of times, but have not used the "Workstation for OS/2 4.0" software. It appears in the manual that it provides all the features of DOS's Netware Requestor for DOS. Also, what other drivers/kits are required to attach to our Unix servers using TCP/IP? I believe that Warp 3.0 does not support network TCP/IP, just SLIP/PPP flavours, right? Thanks in advance... I don't know what a Netware 4.0 Workstation for OS/2 is. I'm using the Novell 2.11 requestor on Warp here at home (2.2 server) and at my client's office 3.12 and 4.0.2 servers. I find an 8MB machine OK for OS/2, but not acceptable with Netware and/or TCP/IP loaded. More like 12-16MB. >OS/2 PM versions of most (but not all) of the Novell utils. Bottom line is that it works fine, and I don't know the REMOCON is a PM RCONSOLE that can be found somewhere on ftp.novell.com Works well, but wish they'd make it into a template. Also hope they'll PM many more utils. [....] Jim

Ditto here. It's sad to see my Pentium w/8MB crawl - another 8MB has been on my list of requests to management for awhile. Ben
