But when it come to >profit is gets a little fussy - and difficult to get past IBM internal only. The AS/400 group will maintain that they are the most >profitable for IBM - and on many scales they are. But they will include drag along revenue from other division. i.e. disk and tape >drives sold for AS/400 by the Storage division. This is storage division profit, but would not exist if not for the AS/400. >By the way, IBM know sells more disk and tape for the AS/400 then for the mainframe. > So how do you count your beans? > Of course the drives sold for the AS/400 by the Storage Division make one hell of profit. God forgive me for saying Jesus Christ, when the space in the drive in my machine ran out, I have to order one from IBM (whose quote was cheaper than my VAR's) for $2600 bucks approximately. $2600 for one lousy SCSI whatsover RAID whatsoever ##$$%@& 2GB hard drive including installation!!! What kind of hard drive is that? Made of Platinum platters and Gold casings? What the hell is IBM's cost on that? I am not going to tell anyone what it costs to add RAM to an AS/400 as there are sensitive souls out there who can't take the shock. IBM is sure is counting beans---my beans, lots of beans. Maybe it's not so hard for an IS officer to submit a recommendation to his superior for a purchase. After all they are but *employees*; its company money that they are spending. But I'm no employee, and this is my business. It sure eats my gut to sign a check for $2600 bucks of your hard earned money for a 2GB hard drive. I have no trouble believing IBM makes big bucks on AS/400 hard drives. > >Mike Wanninger >AS/400 guru and recently ex-IBM >Team OS/2 > Rgds, Chris AS/400 user, IBM customer and Team OS/2 too.
