I'm unable to use my new U.S.Robotics Sportster 28.8 w/ FaxWorks. Upon examining the log, it seems that FaxWorks is issueing a "&D3" command (do a soft reset upon DTR loss) which is causing the modem to respond with "ERROR". Can the U.S.Robotics be setup to ignore commands it doesn't understand? Can FaxWorks be modified to not issue this command?

Let's ask the important question, has USR stopped supporting this capability? I certainly use "reset on drop DTR" on every dialin modem I support, regardless of vendor. I'm almost positive this is supported in the USR 28.8 units I have, using the standard &D3. Can someone comment on this? Without this modems tend to get wedged in odd configurations which don't work. Related comment, someone in USR might want to read: lots of communications programs set the modem to bizarre settings and then *save* them. My old Telebits used to have a switch setting to disallow setting the NVRAM. New ones support a password on the save function. It would be a major value add to me to have this functionality in some form, and by indirection would make me likely to recommend USR to clients. The password approach needs no hardware change and is probably more convenient, but if Joe Disgruntled Worker resets the modem pool before quitting a switch is much nicer to have!

Yes, the &D3 command HAS been dropped from USR firmware with the latest release. New Sportsters (Plug and Pray models) and those upgraded to "V.34+" firmware will respond to this command with "ERROR". USR claims that &D3 is a little-used command, and that &D2 will work instead. Except FaxWorks makes no provision that would allow users to change this parameter. I've heard that SofNet recommends their customers acquire a binary editor and make the change to their compiled modem command file themselves. Now THAT's customer service! While I have to admit that it's a LOUSY way to provide customer support, I DID ftp a binary editor, and edited my FAX.ADP file. I can now send faxes via FaxWorks (lite) and my USR 28,800 modem. However, I can't recieve any. Has ANYONE gotten this combination to work? Any input appreciated!!!! Dan Casey Does "Microsoft" mean Team OS/2 "Small & Limp" daniel@in.net

The address I used was 1B2AC and I changed the string at that address from 33 to 32. The far right hand column of your Binary Editor should have ascii characters in it, and you can clearly see the &D3 change to &D2 when you change the string. Make sure that you have changed the correct string in the FAX.ADP file. As for the SPECIAL COMMANDS, I have it working with simply &H2&I2 in that window. Sends and Receives just fine. I use USR sporster 28.8. I set the following: Class 1 Receive EOP delay Use HW FIFO Special Commands &H2&I2 Didn't hack the binary and this works fine to receive. Haven't tried to send anything.

This is primarily a new fax.adp file with a small readme about what it does. After upgrading, I decided to copy the fax.adp from the lite version into the full version. This would not work. Faxworks Pro complained that there was something wrong with fax.adp and would not run. I made a backup of fax.adp and edited the backup with epm 6.03; replacing the D3 characters with D2. All seems to be working quite well in both send and receive modes. When using faxworks lite, the replacement fax.adp file also allowed me get faxes. Michael E. Perry ***Team OS/2***
