Giving up on AHA-2940 with OS/2

Well, so far I have been unable to install OS/2 Warp Connect on the system with
the AHA-2940. I have 2 systems. which are almost identical, except for:

AHA-2940 DPT 2124

The DPT card arrived yesterday, that gave me the possibility to build the
second system. I booted it up and to my surprise, FDISK saw a disk with 31MB
capacity, instead of the 2069MB that is actually there (HP3725S). That made me
suspicious. After a couple of reboots, it suddenly showed 1023MB. I decided to
take the risk and low-level format the disk.

Lo and behold! After a low level format, all was perfect and even OS/2
installed without a glitch.

That made me wonder, is the low level format of the HP disks to blame for my
install problems? I tried the same trick on the AHA-2940. To no avail, it just
doesn't work. When using HPFS the install process is slow (one file copied in
1 minute after which some timeout occurs so it seems) and after 2 or 3 files it
just hangs.

Should I just give up on the AHA-2940? After all, the DPT just works. Or is
there a way to make this install from CD work? For instance, how do I copy thsi
OS/2 disk 1 with its non-DOS extra-sectors format? I do have the lates Adaptec
driver, but I don't want to overwrite it on the original disk. I also don't
want to create flopy disks form the images on the CD, as I want to be sure that
the system (SCSI- HP - Toshiba) works, and installation is a good test.

So far, I haven't seen the golden tip, and I am on the point of giving up on
the Adaptec.

Thanks,

I use a 2940 with Warp and have had no problems.

My installation may have been done in an earlier incarnation of the machine
with a different controler though.

I'm using a NEC double speed CD ROM drive and a Conner 4 gig 7200 RPM drive.

Hi, Friend.
When OS/2 fail with AHA 2940, use your Utilities disks to boot.
Then edit the config.sys, add these switches on the line:
BASEDEV=AHA7870.ADD /!ET /V /A:0 /I /DM:0 /SM:0 /UR

There was a fix for the Adaptec 2940 on fixpak 5 if it is an "older" Adaptec
2940. If it's a newer 2940 look for a fix at ftp://www.adaptec.com

What are those switches for? What do they do?

Also, I grabbed the updated driver from FTP.ADAPTEC.COM, added the /PCIHW
switch to my BASEDEV=AHA7870.ADD statement, and...I got a boot failure when I
rebooted.

Got any ideas why that switch doesn't work?

Man glaubt's kaum: Die Switches stehen in der Online-Hilfe ...
... dir nur helfen wenn man jemandem mit funktionierenden OS/2 kennt. :-)

Adaptec scheint sich immer mehr M$ anzupassen.

I am not sure why you are having problems. I have installed Warp for
Windows, Warp, and Warp Connect using AHA-2940s and have never had a
problem. All were done from CD-ROM (but of course). My Disk One from all
three versions is recorded with the standard 18 sector format so you
should have no trouble copying. Even if it were the extended format, you
could copy them with the utility on the other OS/2 system that you have
working. But all three disks have a AIC7870 driver; it may not be the
latest, but it certainly worked for me.

I had a problem with a Future Domaine TMP-3260 (the only PCI card they have)
and it turned out to be that I didn;t set an IRQ for the card in my PCI CMOS
setup! After doing that, I realised that OS/2 requires IRQs to be set or
at the very least different from other cards even if DOS works fine
without that.

Good luck.
