Unable to access new SEAGATE drive

I've just bought a new Seagate IDE ST3660A drive and tried to replace
my existing second harddrive with it.

It installed, and formatted under DOS fine to 545MB (>1024 cylinders)
by the use of the utilties provided with the drive. However, when I
boot to OS/2 it doesn't recognise it.

Is there something special I need to do when switching hard drives ?
Could the fact that the drive has more than 1024 cylinders be causing
a problem ?

When I say that it doesn't recognise it, I mean that FDISK shows both
physical drives, but doesn't recognise the partition as having been
formatted (shows as TYPE 57), whilst under DOS I can happily access it.

I've spent an entirely frustrating evening connecting to the SEAGATE
BBS and the IBM BBS and finding absolutely nothing. I've also tried
the Seagate WWW page, and the Warp Pharmacy. Can anyone suggest
anything ?

Did you use that nasty horrible software that comes with it? If so,
that is very likely the problem.

Does your motherboard support LBA or ECHS translation for EIDE drives,
and are you using an EIDE controller card? If not, you can't format it
as FAT, it has to be HPFS. If so, it should format quite happily as FAT.
What hard drive controller are you using? What BIOS? What is the 1e
hard drive?

My 1.2Gb Conner required that I change motherboard to one supporting
LBA translation before it could be used properly (by either OS/2 or DOS,
without using nasty bits of software).

I assume that you have an ordinary IDE controller and are using something
like OnTrak's Disk Manager to fiddle the 1024 cylinder limit ? If so,
there is a fix to allow OS/2 to access Disk Manager'd disks. According
to a recent post in comp.os.os2.misc, the utility is supposed to be
called dmos2.{exe,zip}, but I couldn't see it on my Hobbes listing.

With help from a couple of people who were kind enough to reply to my
plea I have managed to get this working, and thought I should post in
case others are struggling similarly.

The utilities provided with the Seagate drive which are used to allow
DOS to read past the usual 1024 cylinder boundary do something clever
with the boot record which makes the drive unreadable from OS/2.

To get it to work I had to use the utilities to prepare the drive for
only 1024 cylinders (thus losing about 20MB) with the use of the
following command (EZ.EXE provided with drive).

[A:\] EZ /ONLY1024

Having done this the drive was accessible from both DOS and OS/2.

OS/2 does have a problem reading >1024 cyls - I will try to find out if there
is a solution to this problem and let you know.
You may even want to buy a new HD controller so it has the new OS/2 drivers
you could then boot up OS/2 on the older disk, format the new one and
carry on from there. (This may not work but I promise I will try to find
out what to do.)

OS/2 _can_ usually access beyond 1024 cylinders, but only with HPFS.

You can usually gain full access to the drive by using "head-doubling".
This is where you go into the CMOS and double the number of heads
and cut the number of cylinders in half.

Hi Alex, this extract from the README file I found after
installing Warp may help.

[start extract]
OS/2 Warp Version 3 README file found in the root
directory of the drive where you installed OS/2 Warp.

Then again, Warp, DOS and NT all seem to handle the 2 gig FAT partitions
on some of my machines.

yes, tell the bios that the beast has 1024 cylinders,
use OS/2's FDISK to set the primary partition on it (I assume you're using it for dos)
and reformat.

the "extra 40meg" is a sham by seagate to get you to buy the beasty. See if there
is a translation mode on the drive that configures it for half as many cyl but
twice as many heads...

(or use SCSI disks and the problem goes away entirely)

I'm not sure this is enough. I tried this (along with many other
variations), but couldn't get OS/2 to install. What I had to do was run the
installation software that is supplied on the hard disk (you are supposed to
copy it to a floppy before doing anything else) with the parameter that is
something like
EZ /only1024 (the precise format is in the documentation)
and this sets the disk up. After that everything should be OK, though
for some reason after I had installed OS/2 on D and DOS on the C drive,
I had to go into fdisk again and reset the bootmanager as startable.

The downside of this is that there is an implication in the 'manual' that a
TSR is installed that takes up 4K of my memory :-(

But it works - for me.

I had a similar problem. My first drive was 1G (<1024 cyl) and my
second was 9G (>1024 cyl) and OS/2 Warp wouldn't see the second drive.

To install Warp, I had to continuously select "return error to
program" to tell it to avoid the second drive (I now have a program
that changes the partition types on the second drive temporarily, to
keep Warp away from it). Once Warp is installed, you need to download
and apply Fix Pack 5 from ibm (http://www.ibm.com/ has it). Once this
patch was installed, Warp could see the big drive.

This, of course, won't help you *install* on a drive >1024 cyl.

A time ago I also bought a new HD, almost matching yours. It also has got
over 1024 cyl.

The problem I think you are expiring is that Os2 can't (normally?) boot from an
partition extending 1024 cyl. You must partition your drive and install Os2 on
a partition not using aby cyl. over 1024. A partition ext.1024 can be formatted with HPFS

God luck
