OS/2 2.00 Emergency. Help!!!!

Hi, out there!
I am running OS/2 2.00.0 (without service pack) (german version) without
major problem for about 6 months, but now I am helpless.

After a regular shutdown (to make new environment variables active),
the system does not come up again.
(OS/2 is located on HPFS partition C:, nothing else is there)
The effect is the following:
the computer boots, the OS/2 logo appears, the screen becomes gray
(normal up to now), the screen is cleared once, becomes gray again
(still normal), then the system tries to open the folder
system (which was open before shutdown), which in turn should open
system - commandlines (or whatever it is named in english, it is named
"System - Befehlszeilen" in german); BUT no symbols (icons) appear on
the screen. Pressing Ctrl-Esc results in the dialog menu saying that
the program "system" (folder name) is not responding to system request,
selecting "Enter" closes the folder and the WPS, the screen is cleared
and becomes gray again, but then the system tries again to open the
"system" folder, which of course doesn't work again, so the computer
has entered an endless loop. Of course, I can't even do a shutdown,
because the WPS never becomes active....

If I do press Ctrl-Esc just AFTER the system folder has been closed
again, the control menu comes up and displays the WPS as only loaded
program, then soon afterwards "system" flashes up and is replaced by
"system - commandlines". It stays in this status, sometimes I manage to
open the menu for "system - commandlines", but selecting close there
does not have any effect.

Just in case: I did try to remove c:\os2\system\swapper.dat (after
reboot from floppy), but it does not change the behaviour, swapper.dat
is just created new, that's all. And I did run chkdsk x: /f after boot
from floppy for x = all available drives above b:)

I do need the computer URGENT, so what can I do??????

If re-installing the system is the only possibility:
Is there a way of saving the WPS setup first and recovering it
later?????

Please reply directly to my email-address
cxb@phadfa.ph.adfa.oz.au, because I sometimes have problems in reading
the newsgroups.

Thanks,
 Christian Boettger

BTW: I send my registration card to IBM , Racine, WI 53401, USA in
January; but I never got a reaction from them. I would like to enquire
about OS/2 2.1 and/or the Service Pak for 2.0 (both might be difficult,
because I need the GERMAN version here in AUSTRALIA...), so does anybody
know a fax number to complain about the registraion thing? Thanks, CB

I would suggest taking a close look at the "environment variables"
you added. Its possible that something in there may be causing the problem.

I would again advice everybody to make backups of their desktop. This
can easily be done with ZIP for OS/2. You select the option to backup
even empty subdirectories. Anyway it is utterly important that the
extended attributes are preserved (they contain all the information
about the icons).
Later, if your desktop screwes up (or you screw it up) you can easily
restore the desktop partially or entirely.

Maybe this belongs in the FAQ?
