*Sigh.* My install of OS/2 was going so well, too. I
installed the general release of OS/2, and then placed the CSD atop of
it without incident. I was really impressed with the speed and
multitasking of the system. So I decided I would go ahead and install
the 800x600x256 Tseng driver. I successfully negotiated the Welcome
folder mystery, and appear to have successfully installed the hi-res
driver.

The *Problem* is one I alluded to in an earlier question. I
have a generic Tseng board that relies on a peice of software to set
it into its various modes. One of the most important of these modes
from my standpoint is one which changes the refresh rate of the card
to a lower one than is the default. See, I have a relatively old
multisync monitor; it only goes to 800x600, and (I think) at 60 hz ( I
use the command "vmode 35k". In DOS, I would simply run the program
in my autoexec bat file if I intended to use 800x600 Windoze.

Failure to set this switch properly, in Windows and OS/2,
results in a violently swimming screen, totally unreadable, once the
graphics (in my case, the OS/2 desktop) appear on the screen. And if I
recall my previous Windows misery with this problem, once the screen
is screwed, running the program doesn't help.

So what I need, ideally, folks, is a way of having OS/2
calling this little DOS utility BEFORE it initializes its desktop. I
am certain that if we can do this, everything will look OK (though the
screen is fairly messed up, I can see windows changing if I hit
alt-esc and so on. There _has_ to be a way to do this -- please
help!!!

Barring that, I am going to need some way to remove my
"failed" driver and returning to a usable screen.

Oh, yeah -- one big thing working in our favor. I formatted
under the normal FAT arrangment, with Dual Boot. I _can_ get at my
files and utilities right now.

	Help gratefully accepted!!

  	An almost-very satistfied user of OS/2 2.0!

OS/2 has it's own setup to control how it talks to video adapters, and once you have
that set up, you will not need the VMODE command. I don't know if you can do this
from real DOS, as it's normally done from a VDM, but worth a shot. Use vmode to set
your video cards refresh rate ... for all your video modes. Then go into \OS2 and
type SVGA ON. This will create a configuration file (forget what it's called) with
all your video information. After that, you shouldn't have any trouble.

Hope this helps,
Louis

Hey, the solution is in the new README that came with the CSD.
Make a startup.cmd file that contians

start /fs /dos setmode.bat

then a dos batch file setmode.bat which contains

c:\video\vmode 35k
exit

Check the README file. Its a little beeter explained and has better
spelling tham I.

My $0.02 worth. This time it might actually be worth 2 cents!!
Doug.
.
PS. I don't think you have to undo your changes. Just boot to does to do the
editting. I guess.........

I tried this with a Gateay 2000, Diamond Speedstar and their
   monitor (Crystal Scan 1024i)

I found that I had to set the monitor type to "fixed" to get
1024x768 and thus I needed the following two statements to
   get 1024x768 under MS-DOS.

      VMODE MONITOR
      VMODE 38

And so I put these in a file setmode.bat as described above.
However, this did not solve the problem. I can see the .bat
file execute (after the workplace shell starts) and it changes
the full screen dos session to 1024x768, however when it exits,
it seems like the mode returns to the previous setings with a
   violent case of the swimmies.

If anyone has gotten this combination to work properly, please
   let me know!

Fortunately I saved a copy of the VGA display.dll and use the FAT
file system. I just booted MS-DOS from floppy, restored the VGA
display.dll and OS/2 came up properly with the 640x480 screen.

   thanks,
   hank

I've gotten the Tseng drivers to work *fairly* well, but I'm still having problems. I've got a few gifs that
I've been trying to convert properly to bitmaps for the OS/2 desktop. I'm using VPIC 5.0, and initially the
converted bmps look fine when viewed under VPIC, but when placed as the desktop background it looks terrible! All
the colors are screwed, and even a little blurry. It looks as though the drivers are still in 16 color mode, but
from looking at the color pallete after installing the 800X600X256 drivers, this doesn't seem to be the case. Anyone
else have problems putting up 256 color bitmaps for the background?? Also, when I go from the standard desktop to
800x600, some fonts that have been converted from the windows library MORICONS.DLL go black and white. What can I do
to bring them back to their original state under high resolutions?? Any suggestions would be most helpful.
