Because the NT4 installation is for a single CPU ? Some serious core
files are different for SMP - hal.dll, ntoskernel, win32k.sys etc. In my
experience if you have an SMP NT installation and only one CPU is found,
for whatever reason, it just halts and gives an error message.

It is possible that the NT install was on a single CPU which was later
upgraded to 2 CPUs. If the Setup.log wasn't updated at the same time as
the kernel then something like re-applying or updating a service pack
would read the Setup.log and install all the single CPU files. Have you
installed a SP?

This is good.

If you want SMP under NT4 you have some choices:

1. Reinstall NT which should give you SMP
2. Use the M$ uptomp.exe utility from the Resource Kit to update to
SMP but beware it doesn't always work.
3. Do it manually - recommended

If you're not that sure about things, it's probably best to do backup
and a fresh install. Come to think of it *whatever* you do, it's best to
do backup.

Don't really see the need for xpost to comp.periphs but will leave it
this time.
