I remember an apple sales person : mentioning something about using a macintosh as a gateway server from : local talk to ethertalk, but I cannot remember who said it or if it : could be done... Yes.. There are at least two solutions.. If you're only accessing TCP/IP machines via the Ethernet, you can set MacTCP to use the ethernet interface independent of the Appletalk connection, and hence, talk appletalk out the LocAltalk port, and TCP/IP out the Ethernet card. If you need to access Appletalk services through both cards, you can get hold of Apple's Internet Router. This allows you to have multiple active Appletalk connections from your mac (eg: Ethernet and two Localtalk (using both serial ports)). The downside is that your machine would also become a router between the two networks which could slow your machine down a lot if others on the Ethernet decide to print to localtalk printers via your machine :) I wonder if there's a way of using AIR's net interface without running the Router software - perhaps there is, I haven't ever researched this..
