Resurrecting a Daemon on Friday 13

It is Friday the 13th and I couldn't help myself :-).

We had a nasty thing happen to us today. Someone here went to print to
lwsrv (the spooled LaserWriter daemon supplied with CAP). Ten minutes
later, and with his Mac still locked up, and not having saved the
document, he asked me for help.

I promptly duplicated the situation on my Mac - locked up with the
"Looking for Laserwriter" dialog up. Nothing would stop it - not even
command-".". Reboot time?

The lwsrv in question was still registered with atis, but had stopped
running for some unfathomable reason, and was thus not answering
requests from the Macintoshes (but had atis answering the NBP LookUps
on its behalf). Apparently this is a situation not considered
(or tested for) by the LaserWriter driver and it locks up forever
(running 6.0.5 system here).

The fix:

	- See if lwsrv is running - "ps -(appropriate flags)".
	- If it isn't there (or it is and you want to kill it) then:
		- "atis dump" - creates "/usr/tmp/nis.db".
		- Edit this file - remove the entry for the "dead" lwsrv.
		- "atis reload" to get rid of the registration.
		- Restart lwsrv (type in the line from your
		- "start-cap-servers" file again).

Unfortunately it didn't run with the same socket address as the first
time, but by doing this I was able to get my Mac unstuck and running
again. The other Mac is still locked (with the file un-saved)...
Time for a reboot and a retype :-(.
