We did some testing of NFS as part of IBM TCP/IP Version 1, where NFS used to reside. It now resides in DFP, I guess. We did not find much to recommend NFS, in the performance area. And the file name structure presented by MVS is quite different from UNIX. We are getting the latest TCP/IP version/rel to test this all again. I may be surprised at what the latest version can do to provide a good NFS server. On the other hand, from a workstation and LAN backup and archival standpoint, I am much more hopeful with respect to IBM's new Distributed Storage Management product, DFDSM. This can deal with RISC/6000 workstations, OS/2, DOS, SUN OS, Windows,, Mac OS, and Novell Netware clients. It has its own data archiving component(like a mini HSM) and mainframe data management. It can schedule the backups as well, in conjunction with the clients. This isn't really what I would call file serving, a la NFS, but you mentioned backup as a need as well.
