I am finally getting around to try and install PPP at our site here.
I have picked up (from merit.edu) ppp-sunos4.1.pl6.tar. I am having
quite a few of problems with this.

The setup here is the squirrel is a Sun Sparc 2 running SunOS 4.1.1 (work)
and chipmunk is a Sun IPC running Sunos 4.1.1 (home).

I followed the instructions in Readme.streams in terms of installing
files and regen'ing the kernel. I even see the ppp0 interface when
I have the 'init ppp_attach' keywords on the config file.

The problem occurs when I try and run ppp to start the server.
    squirrel# ./ppp debug squirrel:chipmunk
    popped stream module : ttcompat
    popped stream module : ldterm
    ppp: ioctl(I_PUSH, ppp_async)=22 : Invalid argument
    str_restore: pushed module ldterm
    str_restore: pushed module ttcompat
    squirrel#
(The 22 in the value of errno = EINVAL).

I did go in and modify /sys/sun/str_conf.c from what the documentation has.
from< #if     NPPP > 0
    <     { "pppif", &ppp_ifinfo },
    <     { "pppasync", &ppp_asyncinfo },
    < #endif
to  > #if     NPPP > 0
    >     { "ppp_if", &ppp_ifinfo },
    >     { "ppp_async", &ppp_asyncinfo },
    > #endif
This was based on the fact that /sys/os/ppp_if.c and /sys/os/ppp_async.c
have their module names defined as "ppp_if" and "ppp_async" respectively.
I also changed ppp.c to install ppp_if/ppp_async instead of pppif/pppasync.
    <        if(ioctl(fd, I_PUSH, "pppasync") < 0) {
    >        if(ioctl(fd, I_PUSH, "ppp_async") < 0) {
and
    <        if(ioctl(fd, I_PUSH, "pppif") < 0) {
    >        if(ioctl(fd, I_PUSH, "ppp_if") < 0) {
I still get the above error message after these changes.

I have now gone through the above files again, and replaced all instances of
ppp_if/ppp_async to pppif/pppasync. This was based on someone's suggested
that kernel modules may not be able to have underscores in their names.
I still get the same error message as above.

Any ideas as to how to fix this? Any help would be appreciated.
