1. In addition to all the other stuff already posted, look at the
V.42bis parameters. There may be a block size which can be set smaller
for better turnaround and larger for better max compression.

2. Repeat your question in comp.dcom.modems, we have some sharp modem
guys there who may know additional Hayes tricks.
