PPP uses PPPD - PPP daemon, wich : waits for connection requests from PPP , establish it by running : UUCP style calling & login script & finally put PPP module under IP : to allow them to send datagramms. There is nothing which prevents using dial-on-demand SLIP. In this sense SLIP is not worse than PPP. The *real* advantages of PPP over SLIP are: - PPP can carry packets from different protocols (IP, OSI, AppleTalk etc) over a single link. SLIP is IP only. - PPP has a mechanism for avoiding sending control characters on async. links. With SLIP you must have completely transparent link. - PPP adds link-level checksums which make it possible to use Van-Jacobson TCP header compression on less-than-perfect links with no risk of getting user data corrupted. - PPP can be used on async and sync lines; SLIP is async only. Of course, it goes for a price of much more complex software. A typical PPP implementation is about five times "fatter" than a SLIP driver. : But, is PPP itself responsible for proper routing after establishing : the PPP connection - this is a question !? PPP has nothing to do with routing, it's only a protocol to provide packet encapsulation on a point-to-point link. : Suppose I have IP provider with IP 222.222.222.222 ,which should be : used as default route to outside world. How do I say to PPP to start : connection to 222.222.222.222, when I want to make : ftp sco.com ??? You don't have to say anything to PPP. A link has two IP addresses at the ends and your host should have the address on remote end as a gateway for default route. : Should I use route add default 222.222.222.222 1 before it ? : But phisycal interface doesn't exist this time yet ? Yeah, sure. Trash SCO and get a real system. BSD for example. : IMHO , as PPP stands for Point-to-Point, it doesn't allow use : it for routing at all :( You've got it completely wrong. --vadim
