Creating A Standard SNMP API for Microsoft Windows

With the unprecedented success of Microsoft 
Windows 3.x, the efforts of the Windows 
Sockets Specification, and the need for 
Management among numorous network nodes, there 
is a need to define a standard interface for
Network Management. The SNMP Protocol and 
MIB-II provide a powerful base to work with, 
and build on. Without a standard method of 
extending the information base, Windows hosts 
provide nothing but statistics. As more and 
more systems come online there becomes a need
to manage more than what MIB-II provides. 

What this BOF will discuss is the need to make 
available an open interface that will allow 
a network management vendor to provide a 
management station and extended MIBs for each 
SNMP Agent. With this open standard interface
will come network managers that can update 
a Windows system, change printers, configure 
new file servers, and much more. Only with
an open standard can we ensure that the
network management stations can do an
effective task.
