Here's some reading http://www.ripe.net/rs/ipv4-ncc-20031030.html http://www.potaroo.net/ispcolumn/2003-07-v4-address-lifetime/ale.html The analysis basically says we could reach a shortage of address space somewhere in 25 years if XYZ factors remains. Of course it all may change, we *might* run out faster, or maybe slower. One thing to consider is the apparent burden on the routing tables that now must carry so many routing entries that adding up to that (right now) is already a huge problem and has been considered to be one of the major problems of IPv4 even before address space exhaustion. It might even be the critical reason to force new address allotation to be in IPv6 space instead. Allllll speculations! No one knows how the internet will grow. One thing is for sure, there's no shortage of ips now or anytime soon (soon = internet years. if it's predicted that a shortage would occur in 25 years, we can also go back 25 years ago in 1978 and see how the internet ahs grown from there up to today...) Sure, i'd love to ping myself at some incredibly impossible to remember ipv6 address and have the benefit of being easier to route, but i don't think it's gonna happen. It might even be that we will circumvent the ipv4 problems with new approaches to each problem, who knows. Laurent
