The need to go to ipv6 was due primarily to IP address shortages -- public IP address space, they don't make any more. Need to transition was put off when IGP protocols became more flexible with VLSM i.e. classless vs classful plus the use of private IP address space i.e. 10.0.0.0/8, 172.16.0.0/16 - 172.31.0.0/16, etc. This was done some years ago, try and keep up !!!!!!!!!
