What is the best chat script program that is out there, either in the
public domain or usable for non-commercial purposes? By chat script I
mean some C source that can interface between a terminal program and
its I/O port. Off hand, I was thinking of C Kermit's chat script.
How usable is it? What else is out there?
P.S. I suppose that Mosaic is no help in answering such a question.

By chat script I The best one I know is xchat. It is distributed as part of Taylor uucp. It is basically a state machine. Each state has (from memory) a send string, one or more expect strings and associated states and a timeout. I programmed a script in an hour. I use it to retrieve mail automagically from a VMS account on a system where the system administrator is uncooperative. It is freeware and has no known bugs. Scripts are very easy to debug. -- Tom De Pauw, Finning Ltd, Caterpillar (TM) dealer, Vancouver, BC, Canada tom@finning.wimsey.com

Kermit has a scripting language that includes a uucp-like string of "expect", "send" sequences as well as explicit input and output commands with delays and timeouts. It is usable for just about anything where you can predict the points where you can wait for one or more strings. That is, you can't just give it some patterns to match and functions to execute whenever it sees them. Les Mikesell les@mcs.com

You may want to look for 'expect', contained in dejagnu, part of Gnu software. You may get expect as an add-on to tcl from other sources also. I use expect for tunneling uucp over a VAX used as PAD for X25/X29, e.g.. -- Dipl.-Math.
