You need a POSIX > library for those compilers. True. However, there is some interest in improving some features of file I/O in C9X. Two things that come to mind are file attributes (e.g., "stat"-like features) and directories (e.g., the POSIX "dir" services). I think Doug Gwyn is investigating the directories features. I have ``file attributes'' on my task list, but I probably won't get to it until 1996. Other people have mentioned streams-like stacks (e.g., for doing compression and encryption), support for large files, and implementation limits. Since most of this is pretty much localized within the library, this will probably get pushed to the end of the C9X development process -- language and preprocessor issues will be resolved first since they have much more impact on everything else. -FF ------------------------------------------------------------------- (``I only use AOL for reading netnews.'')
