(This is the second part of the message.)
The following are answers to some questions people might have about
this feature:
Q: Why do this if C++ already has this?
A: There are some features that programmers want without getting
the whole C++ language. The subset Bob Jervis defined is a
useful subset (Java is an example of an implentation that
approximates this subset). The C committee has always been
interested in borrowing features from other languages, as
long as they are proven and well-defined. Many of the other
features of C++ are less well-defined (thus the reasoning
for less support of constructors and destructors).
Q: Will these classes be compatible with C++?
A: Yes. The goal is to have maximum portability among
applications
that use only these features.
Q: Doesn't classes belong to C++ and not C?
A: No. In fact other languages are investigating these types
of features as part of their official work items (Cobol for
sure, I'm not sure about Fortran).
Q: Why doesn't the committee let C be C?
A: C isn't the only language that has interest in some features
like this (see above). Many customers would like features like
this without the bulk of C++.
