   Actually it breaks some old code that misparses headers.  Sendmail
on Suns (since 3.4) and DECs (all) strip the high bits befor parsing.
I suspect the number of broken sednmails is diminishingly small!

  I read significant parts of the 8-bit newsgroups bet stripping bits, why
not mail?
  What I **don't** have is 16-bit mail.  That takes mime.
