Could anyone give a summary of the significant features of the Plan 9
OS, the significance of Plan 9 itself if other than just being another
research OS, and possibly a reference to a paper that goes into more
detail? I've seen it mentioned now several times during discussions
about Unicode and am ignorant enough not to have heard of it
otherwise.

Thanks very much,

There's a good introduction to Plan 9 in this month's Unix Review magazine.
Plan 9 is significant because it puts into question the whole client/server
computing model used by Unix workstations today. The authors believe that
general-purpose workstations do not make efficient use of resources. Like
early Unix, Plan 9 takes a "backpacker" approach by rejecting things that
aren't really necessary. It will be licensed to universities shortly.

Another significant operating system nearly on the horizon is Microsoft's
NT, which also supports Unicode.

There is a great set of Plan 9 papers in the July 1990
UKUUG Proceedings. Several of the papers are also available via ftp
from research.att.com, I believe.
