I was given the same advice by the repairer that the machine should be switched off at the mains /after/ switching off at the machine. According to him the problem was due to spikes being passed through the still live mains connection into the printer and confusing the in printer electronics, (filling some sort of counter?) causing a head clean at each pass of the print head. They also updated the ROM in the printer, this helped but I still used ink at an expensive rate. When I changed to my RPC600 from the A5000 the problem disappeared completely. I had however come to the conclusion that there was also possibly something wrong with the printer port on the A5000, but I cannot now remember why I came to this conclusion. Could it be that you are using an older machine?.
