Oh, OK then. If you insist ;)

I have retrieved various postings over the last 8 months and
rearranged relevant bits in 'some' logical order:

I have a 420\1 with a Watford Electronis IDE interface and a
504 Mb Maxtor (currently 528.482.304 bytes). LFAU 2K. If I could
reinitialise to below 500 MB, it would reduce my LFAU to 1K.

9 months ago my 'wasted sectors' was 20.8% (105,893,888 bytes).
I reduced it gradually to 9.4% with !PackDisc by Steve Lee.

!RealCount by Sergio Monesi gives:

 Files (11664): 459,806,441 (88.3%)
 Directories (2435): 4,986,880 (1.0%)
 Wasted sectors: 49,057,280 (9.4%)
 Sectors rounding: 7,090,967 (1.4%)
 Total: 520,941,568 (100%)

My first course of action would be to run FSCK (by Sergio Monesi) to
check whether your map is corrupted. FSCK is something nobody should
be without. I use it daily because I am struggling with 'free' memory.
When my free HD space drops below say 5.5 Mb, deletes of any
significant size will corrupt my Free Space map.

FSCK tries to relink lost files in the directory $.lost+found. In one
extreme case, FSCK recovered around 1 MB and I retrieved some 250K of
files which I thought I had lost.

.....If I do a *verify it stops with a "Disc error 16 at 4" beyond
&1F7EE000.

.....Last year (1997) I reported that my machine would freeze
relatively frequently ....All these hangups have now disappeared
since about a month ago.

The only explanation I have is that since the beginning of this year
I have been running Fsck at least twice daily (to repair corrupt free
space maps), regular *compact, major housekeeping by merging small
files and frequently running a few directories, containing a lot of
textfiles, through Steve Lee's !PackDisc, which removes MEGA bytes
of 'wasted sectors'. Highly recommended.

.....About wasted sectors:

This was 20.8% (105,893,888 bytes) on 15 Jul 1997
is now 8.8% ( 45,814,240 bytes) on 01 Aug 1998.

.... Castle SCSI card for my 420/1 and... 1 Gb Quantum Fireball...

I created 500+500+42 Mb partitions on my SCSI HD, then MOVED all
of my 504 Mb IDE HDisk and with Steve Lee's !PackDisc recovered
9.5 Mb in wasted sectors :-))

I found that the 500 Mb partitions had an LFAU of 2048 bytes.
So I reduced partition 1 by 1 Mb to 499 Mb (LFAU 1024 bytes).
Transferred partition 0 (500 Mb) to 1 (499 Mb) and *gained*
17,367,040 bytes :)))

Then used Steve Lee's !PackDisc to save another 7.25 MB in wasted
sectors.
                          o-o-o-o

Thank you :)

 3700: OSCLIFS$+":Compact "+Drive$:Compact%=FALSE

When I was chronically short of free space, PackDisc would 'compact'
almost every file. I just tried it on !Voyager (68,283,904 bytes)
and it saved 1,414,144 bytes, remaining wasted space 1,466,880 bytes,
but it did not 'compact' once. Presumably because I have 378 Mb free
on a 499 Mb partition.
