Does anyone know any benevolant millionares out there?
If so they should buy Phoebe / RiscOS 4 from Acorn.
Once they owned the rights then the plans to Pheobe should be made public
and RiscOS should be run in a Gnu / Linux manner. ie source code and OS
available freely / for nominal sum.
This could potentially dent Gates 'n' Co.
How many times have we heard "Nice machine, infinitely preferable to my
windoze box, but! HOW MUCH!"?
Make the reference platform PD and you would have a computer which would be
cheap to produce as there is not the associated R&D costs, providing both a
technically and financially superior alternative to the IBM PC.
This platform would then have the availablity of two free OSs, RiscOS and
RiscBSD, (I think Linux eventually got ported to the RPC but I'm not sure).
The architecture would be controlled by a Linux / Gnu style setup.
The machine would need to be kept upto date as far as the latest interface /
motherboard / chip would be concerned. But anything fancy would be taken
care of by expansion cards (eg PCI). Much the same way that M$ dictates what
a PC should behave like today.
RiscOS would be run as Linux is today, with ports being approved and source
made available with any distribution.
Funding would be in the interests of those companies which took up the
manufacturing (ie profits) from the PD designs.
Perhaps this is a little far fetched, although I feel the the software side
is workable if the circumstances were to arise.
I suspect though that the hardware side is a bit wishful and I think that
any continuing version of RiscOS would be in a ported form eg CHRP /
PowerMac or god forbid
<shiver> an expansion card for a windoze box </shiver>
I wonder if any of Mr Cox et al fancy being the next Linus?
Pie in the Sky? Maybe, but then again .....
Boo Hoo ;-(
