I'm posting this rather than E-Mailing as I don't have an E-Mail
address for the writer(s) of FreeNews... Of course, if anyone else
can help, I'd be very grateful!

I've just got FreeNews 0.86, and it STILL doesn't work right (with
NewsBase 0.54n). FreeNews downloads the news fine, but then NewsBase
fails utterly to recognise that there is new news to debatch. The news
is in <FreeNews$Dir>.Data.NewNews, but no joy from Newsbase :-(

To set up, I did the following:
* I replaced <NewsBase$Dir>.transports.freenews with the data in the
  FreeNews 0.85->0.86 upgrade archive.
* I copied the !FreeNews application from the upgrade archive over
  my FreeNews 0.85 application (which also had the same bug...)
* I changed SetHost to contain my machine name.
* I set up a file <NewsDir$Dir>.newsbase.config.FreeNews.groups
  containing only one newsgroup - comp.lang.perl
* I then changed the "default news transport" in NewsBase to freenews.
* I Changed <FreeNews$Dir>.Data.AllGroups to contain just the one
  newsgroup - comp.lang.perl.

I then started FreeNet, ran FreeNews, and the news was downloaded (it
appeared in <FreeNews$Dir>.Data.NewNews). But would Newsbase debatch it???

On a separate note, it would be VERY helpful to have a display of
progress while news is downloading. I'd suggest a % complete (in terms
of articles downloaded vs articles expected) in the icon bar text,
and a status window giving the same sort of information as you get from
the !TCPIP NNTP window. This could come up on a select-click on the
icon bar. (PS Why is the icon bar icon so annoyingly wide?)
