Hiya, I've just started getting an error when I do a *checkmap command - when it seems to have checked the entire map it then says "map inconsistent with directory tree". What's going on? I thought *CheckMap would offer to overwrite the bad map, or is this a different case? Should I be on my knees looking skyward, or what? Hope you're not one for executing the bearer of bad news...
I had this error a while back on an A5000. Seems it's one of those "known
bugs" in the system. The solution is easy - simply copy all your stuff off the
drive onto a handy Econet*, re-format the drive and copy the stuff back.
Checkmap does offer to sort out the problem...so long as it can figure out
what the problem actually is. In this case it gets confused and gives up.
No, this isn't documented anywhere (the problem, or the fact that checkmap
will not always offer to help).
BTW: You'll probably find that files have started occupying more space than
they should as well. Your hard drive will fill up rather quickly from now on
if the behaviour of the one I had is anything to go by. The effect seems to
be logarithmic too - the longer you leave it, the worse it gets.
This has been discussed on here before and I suspect it will be again...

[* for Econet read "tape streamer" or "second drive" or "pile of floppies" as
appropriate]
